Our second session of the year was focused on "Cooking". Not only is this an important life skill but it is also a practical (and delicious) way to practice and use our mathematics skills.
We went on field trips to the grocery store (How do we know what is the best price? Is this coupon actually a good deal?), and a restaurant (what goes into the cost of a meal? How do we calculate tips?). During our health classes, we learned about the different macronutrients and what calories are. During our literacy classes, we learned how to read food labels, recipes, coupons, and ingredient lists.
We got so many reports from parents that kids were eager to practice their new recipes at home and have taken an active interest in their nutrition. We learned how to make a variety of foods (e.g. pierogies, fried rice, minestrone soup, cookies and pie). At the end of our session, we made a full sit-down meal for our guests to show off just how much we've learned. We also provided them with our best musical performance to date: Donna Nobis Pachem (in three-part harmony), Christmas Wish, and Eat Your Veggies (complete with choreography). Check out more pictures in our gallery.
We especially thank Spare Parts Diner and Food Basics for helping us on our learning journey.
