What A Year!

Posted 31/8/2024

We were so busy learning and having fun that I barely had time to post about it!  For more regular updates, make sure to subscribe to our FaceBook Page.   In the meanwhile I'll just outline some of the highlights.

Session 2: Exercise and Sports.  Children make lapbooks of the human body's cardiovasular and musculoskeletal systems, presented a sport-themed book report, and lead guests through a complete workout on presentation day.

Session 3:  Careers.  Our presentation day was "OGA Reunion 2053". Children dressed up as their future selves and explained to guests which careers they had chosen to pursue, why, what they liked about their career and the downsides of that career.  The moustaches and grey hair looked amazing on our little learners!

Session 4:  Chemistry.  My favourite part of this session was making candy and chocolate when learning about the states of matter.  YUM!

Session 5: Drama.  Definitely the highlight of the entire year!  The children made sets and costumes, memorized lines and choreography, and put on a 30 minute mini musical about generosity in front of an audience of about 100 people.  Later on in the school year, we also performed these same songs in a simplified version of the tale at a nursing home.  It was wonderful to be able to cheer up the residents and share our gifts.

Session 6:  Woodworking.  Yes even our youngest students learned to cut, drill, measure, paint, nail and create useful items.  Some students loved this unit so much that they continued to create at home, making bookshelves and moving structures out of wood.

Session 7:  African Geography.  Similar to our Asian Geography unit, each student researched one African nation in depth after learning about the history and geography of the continent as a whole.  I can't decide if the best part of this unit was the trip to the African Lion's Safari or the delicious foods we shared on Presentation Day.
