Who is Your Hero?

Art Connection: Students drew a cartoon of themselves as a heroArt Connection: Students drew a cartoon of themselves as a heroWhat makes one person jump in front of a moving train to save someone and other people to walk by a person in need? In our seventh session this year we learned the science behind empathy and the qualities we need in order to change our world for the better.   (One student ran his own social psychology experiment!).  Through this unit we learned that there are many kinds of heroes.

Some heroes rise to the occasion during emergencies but other heroes work for a long time to change our society for the better.  We looked to heroes from the past to help us learn about the values of determination, respect and hard work.  On our presentation day, each child dressed as the hero they had researched and parents got to meet these amazing heroes from the past.  What would you ask Albert Schweitzer?  What would you say to Jackie Robinson if you could meet him today?  Our friends and family got that chance.  Our musical presentation of "Hero" by Mariah Carey brought tears to parents' eyes.  Best of all, our children got to see in themselves the potential to become a hero too.

It was so nice of Jackie Robinson, Jane Addams, Nellie Bly and Hellen Keller to join us!It was so nice of Jackie Robinson, Jane Addams, Nellie Bly and Hellen Keller to join us!
